TRIPLE A Combi-Course

This is the flagship of our written courses, combining smart use of the computer with face-to-face teaching by an expert coach.  Material will be as job-related as possible, preferably documents that you are working on currently in your professional life. 

The structure of the course is based on the fact that we repeat our mistakes.  Intensive work will be done on helping you rapidly eliminate your most frequent mistakes, as well as improving your style in those areas you most need it. 

Throughout the course, your coach will develop a small, individualised database, your Problem Reference List (PRL). This will contain your most frequently recurring  problems plus a solution.  It will be available to you throughout the course as well as in the years after.  In this way, you will always be able to self-coach in those areas where you have most difficulty.

Combi-Course sequence

The following sequence, developed by us over a number of years, is very effective in optimising your written English:

    1. You write a document.  This is either a document you are currently working on or a document which is job-related. 
    2. You email this document to your coach.
    3. He highlights mistakes or points that could be improved or corrected.
    4. At the same time, he uploads the mistakes onto your individual or group PRL (see below).
    5. About two-four days after stage 1, your coach returns your highlighted document together with the updated PRL.
    6. You have a face-to-face session with your coach.  During this session, you and your coach discuss your mistakes and stylistic problems.  A lot of learning takes place at this point.  You agree on an improved version, which is then typed onto the version you originally sent in.
    7. Back to 1 again, with a new document! 

This sequence normally lasts between one and two weeks.

Further points about the Combi-Course

The following also make the Combi-Course unique on the market: 

  • A lot of learning takes place in stage 6, the face-to-face session with your coach.  In the discussion, you are frequently challenged to clarify  exactly what you meant when you wrote.  You learn to be concise, simple and accurate when you write English.  The discussion takes place in English, so your spoken English will also improve.
  • This is an ideal course for people in the same department or with similar writing needs.  Coaching, stage 6, takes place individually or in groups of 2-4 people.  Each session lasts 1-2 hours, depending on the number of participants.
  • Progress is very rapid because the same mistakes are covered over and over, until you no longer make them.  If there are three or four participants in a group, learning is enhanced, as you learn from others’ mistakes.  Discussions in English about what the writer meant can be challenging if there are colleagues discussing a technical matter in English.  Learning is intense and satisfying at this level.

PRL - Problem Reference List

Developed by TRIPLE A over a number of years, this very popular tool is a key element in the success of the Combi-course. It is a continually updated document produced in Word which contains:

  • learners’ mistakes and the correct version.  These are categorised.
  • an explanation next to the correct version, explaining why it is correct.
  • relevant grammatical rules, tables and diagrams.  The coach explains these in the face-to-face sessions (6 above) and shows the learner how to use them to avoid repeating the same mistake in future.

Other courses in Written English

If you do not need a full Combi-course, we will tailor-make a course to fit your needs.  After discussion with us at TRIPLE A, you may opt for a more general course.  This could be a course in a situation where you decide that you need to improve your written skills in English without having any immediate professional demands. Alternatively, you may need Written English as part of a mixed course, in which case it may not be necessary to develop a full PRL.

A QUICK AND DIRTY TEST


Rewrite the following sentences correctly:

  1. I’m good enough to spoken english.  I’d really like to be better to the Written language.
  2. Profits rose with 25pct last year.  We aim at a fall by five% this year.
  3. It is already october. Expenses increased this year and still go up.
  4. Sometime the sunsets over Sound are indescribable beautiful.
  5. We worked real hard on the project when our buss was walking in thru the door.

When you have finished this, mail the results to us at mail@triplea.dk. There are 18 mistakes (we use British English, not American).  Some of them could be discussed. We will either:

  • send you the correct version
  • send you the correct version with some guidelines
  • phone you to discuss what you might do about the situation
